elan's suzuki experience

Elan has been teaching piano since 1972. In the 1980’s he followed a two-year Suzuki Piano Teacher Training program at the School for Strings in New York, which is dedicated to combining the technical discipline taught at the Juilliard School with the progressive ideas of Dr. Suzuki.

From 1985 to 1992 Elan taught at the Westminster Conservatory in Princeton, New Jersey. Since moving to Massachusetts in 1994 he has maintained a piano studio in Warwick and is on the staff of the Deerfield Academy.

For ten years he taught music at the Village School in Royalston, playing for the students, telling stories of the lives of the great composers, and giving instruction in music theory and ear training.

Elan is a Suzuki clinician in the Boston area, giving Master classes at the Suzuki Festival, Suzuki by the Green in Lexington and at the Creative Arts School in Bedford. He directs the piano portion of the Concerto workshop and is the piano clinician for the Chamber Music workshops at the Suzuki Festival and Suzuki by the Green.

Elan has given concerts throughout the US and in Canada, the Dominican Republic, England and France.

In a related area, Elan studied the Alexander Technique for 14 years. He audited the Teacher Training Program at the Alexander School of Philadelphia for 3 years. He incorporates this technique in his teaching, which provides for ease of movement.

‘As parents, we feel it is our responsibility to offer our children the gift of music.  Learning to play the piano with Elan has been a wonderful way to introduce them to the benefits of musical education.  Both our sons derive pride from their musical accomplishments.

Elan's way of teaching music is complex:  structured, without being rigid; rigorous, yet tempered with a sense of humor and fun.  Expectations and instruction methods are finely tuned to each child's learning style and capabilities. Instruction in piano technique is nicely balanced with instruction of general music theory.

There is music in our house every day and it is a source of great joy to us. For that we are grateful to Elan.

I'd be happy to serve as a reference for any prospective parents needing more information.’
